Ask the one question that saves a return
For anything that connects, charges or fits a device, ask for the exact model and what they want to do. A USB-C plug does not make an accessory universally suitable. If you want to keep the surprise, choose something whose requirements you can actually check, such as a pouch sized for their existing kit.
Give a small frustration a small fix
A person who travels might appreciate a carefully measured organiser. Someone with several similar cables may find readable labels useful. Neither gift needs to pretend it will transform their life. A note explaining the specific problem you noticed makes the choice more personal.
Leave room for preferences
Keyboard feel, headphone fit and screen size are personal. Unless you know the preference, avoid guessing from your own favourite setup. Check return arrangements and let the recipient make the final choice where needed. There is no reason to spend more simply because an item looks more technical.
